Zonation on David Letterman, Crude Humor, and Sarah Palin

Zonation comments here.   You’ll see some compelling video from past installments of David Letterman’s show, along with some questions that Letterman will never answer.

Sarah Palin responds to Letterman’s Atrocious Joke

June 13th, 2009 | By LowellB in Lowell, Media, Politics, TN Blog | No Comments »

I’m someone who is not the world’s biggest fan of Governor Sarah Palin, but I am a huge fan of my 12 year-old daughter. So I’ve been following with interest David Letterman’s utterly inexcusable joke about Alex Rodriguez having sex with Gov. Palin’s 14 year-old daughter. (We first posted about that here.)  On the “Today Show” Matt Lauer asked Palin about the matter. That discussion begins about one minute into this video:

David Letterman: Another “Have You No Decency?” Moment

June 10th, 2009 | By LowellB in Lowell, Media, Politics, TN Blog | 6 Comments »

This is getting a lot of play in the blogosphere. David Letterman’s monologue included this joke about Sarah Palin, who attended a New York Yankees game with her 14 year-old daughter Willow:

Those who know me know I am only a middling fan of Governor Palin, but this is outrageous slime. I have a 12 year-old daughter myself, and so maybe that is affecting my thinking, but some things are simply beyond the pale and this is one of them.

End-of-Weekend Roundup: Three Worlds to Watch

The Muslim World?

I am less enamored of President Obama’s Cairo speech than Sonja seems to be.   Mark Steyn notes that the official State Department press release on the speech headlined it, “President Obama Speaks To The Muslim World From Cairo:”

Let’s pause right there: It’s interesting how easily the words “the Muslim world” roll off the tongues of liberal secular progressives who’d choke on any equivalent reference to “the Christian world.” When such hyperalert policemen of the perimeter between church and state endorse the former but not the latter, they’re implicitly acknowledging that Islam is not merely a faith but a political project, too. There is an “Organization of the Islamic Conference,” which is already the largest single voting bloc at the United Nations and is still adding new members. Imagine if someone proposed an “Organization of the Christian Conference” that would hold summits attended by prime ministers and Presidents, and vote as a bloc in transnational bodies. But, of course, there is no “Christian world”: Europe is largely post-Christian and, as President Barack Obama bizarrely asserted to a European interviewer last week, America is “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” Perhaps we’re eligible for membership in the OIC.

National Donut Day

June 5th, 2009 | By LowellB in Lowell, TN Blog | No Comments »

free-krispy-kreme-glazed-doughnut-300x3001Today is National Donut Day. No, really, it is. (We don’t want our readers to think we write only about very serious subjects all the time. Then again, to many people, donuts are a very serious matter. Serious as a heart attack, some might say.)   In honor of the occasion, you can read more about National Donut Day here, on the L.A. Times blog, where you’ll also find a guide to the best donut shops in Los Angeles. I personally object to the frou-frou donuts pictured in the Times post, but if you can get past that, the blogger gives out good information.

So What Does the Public Really Think About Same-Sex Marriage?

The answer seems increasingly clear. The most recent Gallup poll on the subject suggests that a solidifying majority favor protecting gays from discrimination, but draw the line short of approving gay marriage:

While Americans have become increasingly likely to believe that the law should not discriminate against gay individuals and gay couples, the public still seems reluctant at this point to extend those protections to the institution of marriage. Public support for gay marriage appears to have stalled in the last two years, even as the gay marriage movement has scored a number of legal and legislative victories at the state level in the past year.

Highlights

You need to read the whole thing, but the poll’s most striking numbers are these:
